Fanny Chapman Pool Lesson Program

Lessons are provided for members age four and older, 9:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes are 45 minutes long and follow the progression below:

One-to-One Instruction

This 45-minute block of time is set aside for parents to bring children under instructionage and work with them in the wading pool. A staff instructor will supervise the class and provide assistance when needed. Both parent and child must be pool members.

Beginners

This class focuses on kicking, floating, safety skills, and beginning crawl.
Promotion Requirements:
Beginner I:

  • Kick width of pool in good form
  • Arm stroke, no breathing, one width of pool
  • Backstroke kick
Beginner II:
  • Kick across pool
  • Swim 25 yards crawl in good form
  • Perform good backstroke kick
  • Survival float for 1 minute on front in deep water
  • Jump in and remain afloat
  • Underwater swimming
  • Safety swim-jump into deep water and swim ½ of pool
  • Tread water

Intermediate

Promotion Requirements:
Intermediate I:

  • 25 yards crawl in good form
  • 25 yards backstroke in good form
  • Breaststroke kick
Intermediate II:
  • 50 yards crawl in good form
  • 50 yards back stroke in good form
  • 25 yard breaststroke
  • Butterfly kick
  • Dive off pool side

Swimmers

Promotion Requirements:

  • 50 yards crawl in good form
  • 50 yards backstroke in good form
  • 50 yards breaststroke with proper kick
  • 50 yards butterfly with proper kick

Advanced/Life Saving Skills

This is an instructional class designed to practice and refine all previously taught skills. It will also introduce basic life saving skills and help prepare the student for a Red Cross Advanced Life Saving course.

Water Games

This class introduces the fundamentals and team play of sports such as water polo, water basketball, volleyball and rugby.

Stroke Analysis Clinic

This class is designed for children who for any reason (physical, mental, emotional, or social) cannot meet the requirements of the regular lesson program and who require individualized attention. It is not for children involved in an activity such as work or summer school which interferes with his/her regular attendance in the general program. The requirements of this class are at the discretion of the instructor and will be suited to meet the needs of the students. If the instructor feels the student is ready to return to the lesson program she or he will direct the student to the appropriate class.

Diving

To participate in diving lessons children must have achieved at least the level or Intermediate I swimming class.

Promotion Requirements:
Diving I:

  • Front approach with hurdle, back hurdle, forward dive, backward dive,and somersault
Diving II:
  • Five required dives and six optional dives with at least one dive in eachof the following categories: forward, backward, inward, reverse, twisting.

Fanny Chapman Swimming and Diving Teams

Our competitive teams are an outgrowth of our instructional program. As such,participants must be members of the pool and have reached at least Intermediate I in our lesson program. Further details can be obtained from our Head Swimming Coach.
