Cultural District Improvements
By John Davis, Borough Manager
The Doylestown Borough Cultural District's $600,000 improvement project is moving toward completion. Funded by a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program Grant, and over $250,000 in private donations, the project's signature elements are the two new prominent landscaped Gateway Plazas. These entry landmarks, reminiscent of Mercer's unique concrete construction techniques, feature Moravian Tiles and design elements from the adjacent museum. The new Gateways lead the visitor to boulevards lined with Victorian Style Street Lighting and flowering trees, new sidewalks and decorative brick crosswalks.
Completing the picture will be the burying of all the overhead utilities. The removal of these unsightly overhead lines throughout the district is scheduled for completion by the Fall. With this removal, visitors will, for the first time, be treated to unimpeded views of the Mercer Museum as well as the former prison, now home to the James A. Michener Art Museum.
